How To Safely Remove a Tick From Your Dog

Learn how to safely remove a tick from your dog and how to prevent them as best as possible.

Firstly, what are ticks?
Ticks are small parasites that suck on the blood of their host (pets and humans).
What diseases do ticks carry?
Ticks carry the following diseases: Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis, also known as TBE, TBE is rarely spread from ticks to pets/humans.
Where are ticks usually found?
Ticks love to hide in long grass, woodlands or other grassy areas. They're commonly found in areas with deers or other livestock.
How can I prevent ticks on my dog?
Check your dog daily for ticks, common areas they love to burrow into are: between the toes, under elbows and around the ears. However, all areas of skin should be checked.
You could also use a tick prevention product.
You may find a tick crawling onto your dog's coat before they've burrowed into your dog's skin, if this happens remove it immediately.
What do I do if a tick is imbedded into my dog's skin?

Step 1: Locate the tick, put gloves on (if you have some) and gently part the fur on your dog's coat to have easy access to the tick.
Step 2: Using a tick remover tool (photo on the left for reference), slowly push it under the tick.
Step 3: When you have the tick securely in the tick remover tool, start to twist it in a clockwise circle and the tick will come loose and detach itself.
Step 4: Make sure the tick is fully removed by looking at your dog's skin. You then need to get rid of the tick, you can do this by flushing it down the toilet, however it is recommended to put the tick in alcohol first.
Step 5: Clean your dog's skin and wash your hands. Ticks can leave a little mark where they have pierced your dog's skin, so it's best to keep it clean over the coming days.
If you suspect your dog has been bitten by a tick, or there's a possibility watch them closely for any signs of illness, changes in their behaviour or appetite and consult with a vet.
Stay safe this tick season 💛
